    ...for more than just wood

Hexion is one of the leading suppliers of adhesive systems to producers of structural wood components. Our success is the result of a total solutions approach to meeting customer needs. This includes offering an extensive portfolio of chemistries tailored to meet a variety of functional requirements.

Wood-Adhesives-Performance-Adhesive-Chemistries-03 Customers can choose from the following adhesive options:

    • Casein – natural, bio-based alternative
    • Emulsion Polymer Isocyanate (EPI) – two-part solutions for a variety of applications
    • Ethylene Vinyl Acetate – easy-to-use, one-part systems for internal, dry-use applications
    • Melamine-based Resins – excellent moisture resistance and strength make them ideal for everything from cabinet veneers to structural finger jointing
    • Phenol Resorcinol-based Resins – an industry standard for structural engineered wood applications such as I-beams and glulam which must retain excellent thermal stability
    • Polyvinyl Acetate (PVA) – two-part and one-component resins for a variety of applications
    • Resorcinol-based Resins – primarily used in structural, exterior applications
    • Urea-based Resins – proven, cost-effective solutions for many interior, Type II applications

    Emulsion Polymer Isocyanate (EPI) Adhesives

Hexion offers a broad range of EPI adhesives for everything from structural applications to veneering. Our EPIs are used in I-joist flanges, for finger jointing, to bond wood to nonporous substances in flooring, and for LVL to LVL face gluing.

EPI adhesives are two-component systems: a water-based emulsion with an isocyanate hardener. Crosslinking agents can be specified to form an exceptionally strong and durable bond.

Customers choose EPIs for a variety of reasons, including:

    • Durability: Type I, II or exterior structural
    • High moisture, temperature and creep resistance
    • Excellent bonding performance to substrates such as wood, metal, foam, fiberglass, plastics, etc.
    • Ability to bond both porous and nonporous substrates (at least one side of the bond line must be porous
    • Flexibility in curing: RT, hot set or RF
    • Low sensitivity to wood moisture content

EPI adhesives utilize no-added formaldehyde and present lower VOCs. They are also easy to handle and easy to clean up, with just water. Because they are two-component adhesives, EPIs must be used with suitable mixing equipment.
