Hexion Specialty Chemicals

Methylated Melamine Formaldehyde Resins

Melamine resins are "methylated" by adding excess methanol to the manufacturing process. The result is the incorporation of methoxymethyl functional groups in the structure of the melamine formaldehyde polymer. Methylation makes these resins extremely stable. By varying the degree of methylation, Hexion is able to meet the requirements of a wide array of processes and applications.

Methylated melamine resins are capable of:

  • Crosslinking a diverse group of polymers that contain hydroxyl, amino, amido, or carboxyl functional groups
  • Improving mar, stain, block resistance in wood coatings and catalyzed systems
  • Creating fabric stiffness or “hand” and crosslinking latex emulsions in textile applications
  • Providing stability and effective use in water-based systems
  • Imparting fire retardant properties
  • Working in many processes and applications

Hexion’s line of methylated melamine resins are used regularly in industrial coatingstextilesnonwovenspapermaking and other applications.
