EPON Resin 8521-MX-60 is a 60 percent solids solution of an EPON Resin 1004F type epoxy resin in 50 percent xylene and 50 percent 2-butoxyethanol. This resin was designed primarily for use with a suitable curing agent to obtain complete film curing at normal room temperatures. EPON Resin 8521-MX-60 has been modified to improve its surface tension properties. Therefore, it does not normally require additives for prevention of crawling and cratering.
Processing/How to use
A wide variety of curing agents can be used with EPON Resin 8521-MX-60. Those most commonly used are the aliphatic amines, amine adducts, the tertiary amines, and the polyamides.
The usual high levels of chemical resistance, corrosion resistance, flexibility and adhesion properties associated with the unmodified epoxies are provided by films of EPON Resin 8521-MX-60. It is suggested for use in the formulation of primers and enamels for industrial maintenance areas where corrosive fumes are a serious problem. This epoxy resin is also useful for large pieces of equipment for which a baking system is not practical.
Typical of many epoxy resins, EPON Resin 8521-MX-60 is initially incompatible with many of the curing agents used. As the chemical reaction proceeds, compatibility develops. Use of the system too soon after mixing can result in “blushing” or other film defects; to prevent this, an induction period is required. Not over 2.5 mils dry film should be applied per coat allowing approximately 40 hours between coats.
