Innovative Hexion Epoxy Resin System Specified for Structural Components by Leading German Automotive OEM

COLUMBUS, Ohio - (March 8, 2016) – An EPIKOTE™ epoxy resin system from Hexion Inc. (“Hexion” or the “Company”) has been specified by the BMW group for the volume production of structural composite parts in new BMW 7-Series automobiles. A selection of these components and others will be on display at the JEC World 2016 composites show, March 8-10, in Paris.

In partnership with industry developers, Hexion is constantly adapting its composite resin portfolio to answer manufacturers’ increasing need for strong yet lightweight alternatives to metal, that can be produced at faster speeds. Hexion’s latest advance in resin technology can help manufacturers reduce vehicle weight and at the same time, hasten production of high-performance composite components.

In the BMW application, exclusively Hexion resins are used in the carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) roof cross-members, center tunnel, and sills, and in a 2.7 meter arc along the roofline of the carbon core body structure manufactured by liquid compression molding (LCM) and high-pressure resin transfer molding (HP-RTM).

This use of CFRP for structural elements of the passenger cell as part of a hybrid construction scheme incorporating ultra-high-strength steels increases both the overall strength and the torsional and bending stiffness of the passenger cell. In this application, the configuration of sheet metal elements can be adjusted as required, allowing for a significant reduction in the weight of the body. In fact, the weight of the new 7-Series has been reduced by 130 kg (approximately 287 pounds) compared to its predecessor while still offering significant additions to improve comfort and safety on board, according to BMW.

Hexion developed EPIKOTE™ Resin TRAC 06000 with EPIKURE™ Curing Agent TRAC 06130 to match all of BMW’s performance and production speed requirements in LCM and HP-RTM processing. The product cures in less than 2 minutes, enabling fast and cost-efficient part manufacture.

“Hexion has more than 50 years of experience in the composites industry and is committed to making significant investments in support of CFRP development for large production volumes in Automotive,” said Francis Defoor, Hexion's Automotive segment leader. “Our expertise in epoxy chemistry as well as our application and process know-how make us a leading development partner for lightweight composite technology.”

Examples of the new BMW 7-Series and other Automotive composite parts will be on display at the Hexion booth—Hall 6, Booth F54—during the JEC World 2016 composites show & conferences, Paris Nord Villepinte Exhibition Center, March 8-10.
