Hexion continues to drive performance, efficiency and safety in our manufacturing.

Manufacturing Excellence Initiative

In 2014, we introduced a Manufacturing Excellence (ME) program to increase our operational effectiveness while ensuring a safe work environment. Hexion’s ME program matches manufacturing execution with efficient performance in all areas of operational excellence (safety and environmental performance, reliability, quality and customer satisfaction). The program has integrated our technical expertise and core values through the development of site-specific blueprints for success.ME champions strive to create sustainable, positive change in how we operate and partner directly with site manufacturing and engineering leaders to work together to drive continuous improvement and life-cycle thinking.

Energy Summit and Policy

Hexion recently published our company-wide Energy Policy Statement based on work done in 2014. 

At Hexion, efficiently managing energy resources is essential to operational excellence and the sustainability of our business. Therefore, our associates will strive for energy efficiency throughout our business activities with a focus on existing and newly designed processes and products across their life-cycle. The purpose of the implementation of our energy policy is to increase stakeholder value, optimize resource use, reduce greenhouse gas emission intensity and reduce operating costs.

A cross-functional, cross-regional team was assembled in 2014 to explore and brainstorm ways of capturing, sharing and analyzing energy data of Hexion’s manufacturing processes. The team developed 248 action items covering all facets of operational and value-chain processes. From this, Hexion’s divisions have focused energy and functional leaders for a better understanding of the benefits from proposed recommendations.

Reducing Our Carbon Footprint

In addition to focusing on manufacturing, Hexion continues to explore ways to reduce our environmental impact. In 2014, we began documenting our office-generated carbon footprint (OCF). In partnership with Metro High School's Energy Learning Center, Hexion created its first assessment of the environmental impacts of our offices. In comparing our Seattleweg,  Netherlands and Columbus, Ohio offices, there is an opportunity to reduce energy consumption by more than 25 percent per person with changes in habits along with fixtures and equipment.

“Get Zero. Get Home.”

In 2014, Hexion created a cultural change program targeting a reduction in Severe Incident Factors (SIF). SIFs are defined as high-risk work activities which, if not properly controlled, could result in serious injuries, permanent disabilities, and/or fatalities. Called “Get Zero. Get Home.” this cultural shift in thinking has increased awareness of workplace conditions and activities that have the possibility of putting associates, contractors and visitors at risk. With our diligent focus and the continued execution of our health, safety and environmental strategy in 2014, Hexion experienced the following improvements when compared to 2013:

An 18 percent improvement in environmental incidents,
A 40 percent improvement in Hexion SIF recordable incidents, and
A 58 percent reduction in SIF recordable incidents involving contractors.
