Social Responsibility

We are the community, it is where we work and live. Our charitable contributions primarily focus on causes that support children, the less fortunate, health and wellness, and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education at all levels. Community outreach allows Hexion to benefit while also benefiting society.

Through a variety of outreach activities, Hexion and more than 2,000 of our associates have affected more than 600,000 people, and raised and/or donated more than $700,000. Our sites continue to make progress toward our goal of 100 percent participation in community engagement programs.

Our efforts have supported a variety of non-profit organizations not only in our headquarters of Columbus, Ohio, but around the world. Our global impact comes from local participation as well as supporting such organizations as the United Way, American Red Cross, American Heart Association, Habitat for Humanity, Nationwide Children’s Hospital and Children’s Hunger Alliance.  In addition to supporting organizations by giving of time and talent, Hexion associates have raised more than $5.6 million for United Way of Central Ohio, more than $500,000 for Pelotonia and more than $185,000 for The American Heart Association.

Every year our Barry, UK site welcomes some students to show them around the manufacturing plant and to help them understand how school work fits into real life as well as provide insight into difference career choices that may be available.

This year, they hosted three students for a three-day, action-packed program. The program began with a safety introduction and then continued with time spent in nearly every department on site.
Some of the highlights for this year’s program include:

  • Testing the safety showers
  • Analyzing substances in the lab
  • A look at the history of the site going back to the 1940’s
  • Working in various departments such as warehousing and maintenance

Throughout the program, the students are tasked with completing a log book after each event to reflect on their experiences and what has been helpful for them. The goal of this is to help these students find out what they may want, or don’t want, to do as a career.

At the end of the program the students are given certificates to take home as well as feedback on their time there. The students will also give the site feedback on the event so the Barry site can continue to make modifications to the program to make it even better next year.

A Safer Environment for Community and Employees

Hexion employees continue to collaborate with community members and the Northwest Youth Corp to conduct removal and clean-up of needles and other vegetation adjacent to our Springfield, Oregon facility earning a spot in the 2019 Canines for Clean Water Calendar. The group worked to save and add many native species. The efforts not only improved the beauty of the area by our facility for our associates and community, but also reduced crime and transient activity in the area and was recognized by the City Council and Chief of Police.

Deer Park Associates Stride for Schools

A team of Hexion Deer Park associates recently participated in the Deer Park Strides for Schools. This is the third year that Hexion sponsors and participates in this event. Some family members participated as well.

This event supports the Deer Park Education Foundation which is a non-profit organization that provides grants to Deer Park ISD teachers and students.
Several of our team members received medals for their race performance.

Hexion Cares Day

Hexion supported ~20 organizations across the country as part of Hexion Cares Day 2019 on October 4th. This is an event that demonstrates Hexion’s commitment to serving the communities in which we operate and encourages associates to spend the day volunteering with fellow colleagues.

This year, the event expanded beyond Columbus, Ohio headquarters to reach from coast to coast at the US.

In 2018, more than 100 associates volunteered more than 400 service hours in the Columbus, Ohio area during the annual event.

In 2019, associates across the US volunteered at national and local community organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, The American Red Cross, The MidOhio Food Bank, The South Side Learning Center, Columbus Early Learning Centers, Community Shelter Board, TWCIA, United Way, and Homeless Families Foundation – as well as many other schools and after-school programs.

Iserlohn Plant Participates in Local Irrigation Campaign Created due to Heat Wave

An extreme heat wave has impacted most of the world for a few weeks during 2019 and stretched from most of the United States all the way to the other side of the world. The extreme heat wave in Germany caused temperatures to reach up to 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) which can pose a major danger to people.

However, people are not the only ones affected by extreme heat. Young city trees are in severe danger in heat like that due to multiple factors. First, because they are young trees, they have not had time to form a large root system, so they will have a difficult time storing enough water. Another reason they are in danger is because most of them are planted close to roads and the asphalt can prevent them from rooting sufficiently.

Because of the heat wave and the danger it poses to the young trees, the city of Iserlohn, Germany asked its residents to help them. They asked people to irrigate their local trees to keep them from drying out.

Hexion, as we all know, has a very strong motto of “Responsible Chemistry” and corporate citizenship, so the associates at the Iserlohn plant answered their cities call for help.

The associates wanted to be able to provide enough water to as many trees as possible, so the fire brigade rushed to the nearby trees with one of their fire engines. The tank on the engine can hold up to 2,000 liters of water and they were able to use that water on nearby trees in a playground and parking lot.

Social Responsibility

Hexion will strive to engage globally with the communities where we live and work. We are dedicated to being a well-respected and transparent partner in the community.
