VeoVa House: A World of Versatility

VeoVa™ Monomers Product Portfolio

Enhancing System Performance

The vinyl esters of Versatic™ acid, VeoVa monomers, have highly branched aliphatic structures, which contribute to improving key performance properties of the derived polymers. Based on their unique performance characteristics, VeoVa vinyl esters are used in a variety of emulsions for architectural coating, adhesive and construction applications where they provide a wide range of benefits.

Boost the Performance of Your Paints, Adhesives and Concrete Admixtures

Inclusion of the branched Versatic structure in a polymer sterically protects the ester bonds of the adjacent monomer units against hydrolysis, resulting in greatly improved alkali resistance. VeoVa monomers improve resistance to water and other polar materials as well. Finally, VeoVa monomers are not degraded by UV light and therefore do not cause yellowing.

Performance characteristics

  • Alkali resistance
  • Water repellancy / Low surface tension
  • Reduced water absorption
  • Outdoor durability
  • Improved adhesion to nonpolar substrates
VeoVa molecule groups

Typical Applications

Roof Coatings

Blending Resins and Sole Resins

Emulsions containing VeoVa™ monomers can be used as sole binders or blending resins for the formulation of high-performance elastomeric roof coatings. The highly hydrophobic blending resins allow the easy upgrade of a wide variety of different elastomeric roof coating formulations.

Polymers based on VeoVa 10 monomer provide the following added value in elastomeric roof coatings:

  • Increased dry and wet adhesion to roofing substrates (e.g TPO)
  • Reduced water absorption
  • Substantially increased elongation
The highly hydrophobic blending resins allow the easy upgrade of a wide variety of different elastomeric roof coating formulations.

Wood Coatings and Adhesives

Durable Exterior Wood Coatings

Most wood will deteriorate rapidly during outdoor exposure without some protective coating.

Acrylic polymers modified with VeoVa™ monomers (VeoCryls), are particularly suitable for high-performance exterior wood coatings. The core / shell technology can be used to obtain polymers with a very good balance between hardness and flexibility.

water-droplets-on-wood

VeoCryl-based coatings provide longer lasting wood protection through increased water repellence, UV resistance and increased adhesion to wood, resulting in improved weathearability and longer exterior durability.

Deliver coatings as flexible and versatile as the wood itself, VeoVa Silane technology coatings can provide resistance against weathering, scratches and wear, while remaining sufficiently flexible. With the short drying and early tack-free times of a 1K system, processing is quick and easy.

Cardura E10P glycidyl ester can be converted into a hydroxyl-functional acrylic monomer by reaction with (meth)acrylic acid. The Cardura E10P glycidyl ester-based hydroxyl acrylate building block allows polymer designers to tailor the hydroxyl-functional emulsions for a specific desired end-use from wood and protective coatings to wall, floor and high performance top coats.

Additives for Construction

Premium Performance Concrete Admixtures

Polymer-modified mortars can be made by adding an emulsion polymer to the cementitious mix or by adding redispersible powders (RDPs) to the so-called drymix.

RDP's based on VeoVa™ 10 monomer provide significant benefits, because of the intrinsic properties of VeoVa 10 monomer:

  • Improved workability
  • Better water retention and open time
  • Higher flexural strength and flexibility
  • Increased adhesion to a variety of substrates

Waterproofing

Water Repellency

Highly Hydrophobic & Water Repellent Polymers

VeoVa™ 10 vinyl ester is a monomer with a unique, bulky and hydrophobic structure, used in the production of a broad range of high-quality emulsion polymers. The incorporation of very hydrophobic VeoVa™ monomers into polymer backbones is an elegant and durable solution to enhance hydrophobicity of coatings. The increased coating hydrophobicity leads to improved long-term performance and retention of the film’s mechanical strength under humid and wet conditions. Applications such as anticorrosive paints, wood coatings, bathroom & kitchen paints and waterproofing sealers benefit from the high water repellence that polymers based on VeoVa™ vinyl esters bring.

Water Whitening Resistance

Reduced Water Whitening

Highly hydrophobic VeoVa™ vinyl ester monomers are key in achieving good water-whitening resistance, water repellence and other performance properties such as outdoor durability.

VeoVa monomers increase water resistance, even that of acrylic systems. Modification with VeoVa 10 monomer further enhances hydrophobicity and water resistance and hence, water-whitening resistance.

Biocide Leaching

Sustainable Long-Term Dry Film Protection

Biocides and fungicides used in paints are prone to leach-out over time upon aging and weathering. This leach-out jeopardizes long-term dry film protection and can affect durability, aesthetics and release to the environment.

Highly hydrophobic VeoVa™ vinyl ester monomers impart excellent water resistance, water repellence and barrier properties when incorporated into acrylic polymers. The high water resistance of VeoVa / Acrylic binders significantly reduces the leaching out of dry film preservatives. This enables the formulation of paints with long-term fungi and algae resistance, increased dirt streaking and rain mark resistance and a superior durability.
